10-day practice schedule
Days 1–3: Mastering balance and low-speed control
Walk the scooter or motorcycle: Get a feel for the vehicle's weight. Push the vehicle forward while walking alongside it. Squeeze both brakes to practice stopping.
"Power walk" without the engine: With the engine off, sit on the seat and push yourself forward using your feet on the ground. Lift your feet up and glide for as long as possible to practice balancing. Place your feet back down gently when you feel unsteady.
Practice with the engine on: Start the engine and, with your feet on the ground, use very slow acceleration to begin moving. Continue "power walking" while your engine is idling to get comfortable with the vehicle's momentum.
Begin lifting your feet: As your balance improves, try lifting your feet onto the footrests for a few seconds before placing them back on the ground to stop.
Days 4–6: Controlling speed and direction
Throttle and braking: In a straight line, practice accelerating gently and then using both the front and rear brakes smoothly to stop. Avoid sudden acceleration or abrupt stops.
Master turning: Start with wide turns in both directions. Consciously look where you want the vehicle to go, and your body will naturally follow. Keep your speed low and steady.
Practice figure-eights: Set up markers and practice riding in a figure-eight pattern. This will build your confidence in cornering and control at low speeds.
Motorcycle gears (for bikes): If you are learning on a geared bike, practice shifting through the first and second gears repeatedly while moving. The key is a smooth, gentle roll-off of the throttle while pulling in the clutch.
Days 7–8: Handling more complex maneuvers
Gradual speed increase: Practice riding at a slightly faster pace while maintaining smooth throttle and brake control.
Look over your shoulder: Before turning or changing lanes, practice a head-check over your shoulder. This is a critical habit for on-road safety.
Emergency braking practice: Find a clear stretch of pavement and practice stopping firmly. Understand how your vehicle reacts and how much pressure is needed on the brakes. If your bike has ABS, be aware of when it engages.
Days 9–10: Entering real-world conditions
Ride on quiet streets: Take your vehicle to a very quiet residential area with minimal traffic to practice riding in more realistic conditions.
Apply road rules: Practice signaling, obeying traffic signs, and being aware of other vehicles around you. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
Increase awareness: Remember that a two-wheeler is smaller and less visible than a car. Always assume other road users don't see you and be extra vigilant.
Final assessment: If you are learning with an experienced rider, have them follow you and provide feedback on your control, signaling, and overall safety.
